DOCUMENTARY FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

For me Documentary Family Photography is all about the raw natural moments, having an adventure, making a mess, hide and seek, cuddles at home all of those real moments together that pass so quickly. I love looking back on old family photos. My mum kept photo albums of holidays and special times, it’s lovely to be transported back, look at the old hair cuts and fashion, have a good laugh and have the knowledge of holidays I don’t quite remember and be taken back in time to those that I do. Having these albums and photographs to look back on are one of the main reasons I became a photographer in the first place!

Family photography to me is so important because it’s part of a legacy. Documenting your family history is as important for you as it will be for your children in years to come. Whether you are documenting your pregnancy, latest addition to the family, a birthday or a family day out. Having photographs of you all together, in the moment being your beautiful awesome selves is a rare and precious thing and it’s lovely to know that those photographs will be treasured by parents, grand parents, children and even your children’s future families.

family photography at home

I love photographing families at home if I can, as your home whatever it looks like is a part of your story as a family. You might not always live there, or it might change a lot as your family grows but it serves as a great anchor for that place in time for your families story. For smaller children in particular starting at home can be fun, it’s warm and safe, their favourite toys, books and foods are all on hand and it eases them into having a photographer around… Then if you fancy it we can take our photographic adventures outdoors, whether that’s the garden or the local park and explore the great doors together while I get some lovely snaps of you adventuring as a family.

Do you do family portraits?

As part of your Documentary family session I will spend about 10 minutes at the beginning, middle and end of the session getting some portraits of you together as a family. I try to keep them as natural and as fun as I can to keep in with photojournalistic style of the shoot.

outdoor adventures

Then if you fancy it we can take our photographic adventures outdoors, whether that’s the garden or the local park and explore the great doors together while I get some lovely snaps of you adventuring as a family. For older children it might be more fun to do the whole shoot outdoors, visit the local beach or I can meet you on a day out somewhere and we can get some awesome photographs while you make some memories together. For younger children it can be better to start the shoot at home while they get used to me being around in familiar surroundings and then once are used to having a photographer around we can head outside as a pack.
